A 3-hour ferry away from mainland Shimane, 180 islands of various sizes stretch out across the Sea of Japan along the coast.
Suppose you extend your eyes out to the scenery in front of you. In that case, the gorgeous scenery conjures a thought: the sight before your eyes could crumble away at any moment, a landscape that might vanish tomorrow.
That abstract idea of impermanent beauty encompasses Ama town’s motto: ‘There is nothing we don’t have’ or, contrastingly, translated as, ‘Everything we have is right here’.

Symbolising the delicate relationship that the bare earth and the island life have as they intertwine in this magical place. Focusing on what we have and lack, we question what true "abundance" means.

  • Entô consists of two buildings: In 2021, the new wing, ‘Entô Annex NEST’ was built, and the main building ‘Entô BASE’, which carries on Entô’s history. NEST and BASE combine to create 36 rooms (with a maximum capacity of 77 people), all allowing for gorgeous ocean views. The Dōzen Caldera stretches before your eyes, watching the passing ships as they come. Merge into your natural surroundings, and enjoy these precious moments to yourself.


  • A three-story building with the calming scent of natural wood. At Entô, we have six different types of rooms. True to its name, ‘nest, ' these rooms have “honest” and “seamless” design features that allow you to blend into the surrounding nature. The gap between inside and outside feels as if it is nonexistent.


  • Located on the first floor of the annex (Entô NEST), this space features a full-wall ‘geoscape’ and displays of fossils from ancient creatures, including dinosaurs. Through the continuous changes of the earth spanning billions of years, Oki now exists before your eyes. Sit back on the solitary sofa, feel the accumulation of time, and spend a relaxing moment here.


  • With our motto being ‘local production for local consumption’, we welcome guests to enjoy our seasonally selected meals. Featuring locally sourced ingredients and prepared with care, we can offer tastes unique to this idyllic landscape.

You may decide that relaxing while watching the boats passing by is your perfect way to relax. You may also choose to cycle around the island, take a nighttime stroll to soak in the peaceful silence, thoroughly enjoy the exhibits inside the museum, or start a conversation with the islanders on the terrace. Whatever you decide to do, every experience at Entô connects to the Geopark and the surrounding landscapes. Leave your heavy baggage behind momentarily and spend your time here as you please with no stress.

Aside from the welcome drink and sweet, there are regular activities on the island.

Please do visit the Geo Lounge which is free even if you do not have a hotel reservation. It is good to understand more about the geopark

A few years ago, I was captivated by the sight of a poster, and headed to a place called Oki Island. Looking back, the scenery around the island was very symbolic, but I was moved by the overwhelming natural scenery. The place is now a UNESCO Global Geopark.

It has been a long time since the formation of the land.

It is a place where people can learn about the ongoing human activities in the area.

"Nothing is unnecessary (Everything that is important is here)" is a new luxury in the space, the food and the experience.

The new establishment is called "Ento" The Dozen Caldera spreads out before your eyes, and at dusk you are enveloped in the sun setting over the neighboring island of Nishinoshima. It's a time when you can naturally think about the continuous breathing of the earth.

This is a hotel that offers its guests a place to live. At the "Entò Walk" held every day, guests can take a walk around the hotel while listening to the island's staff talk about it. Here, we saw a landscape where learning and feeling are connected to protecting the earth in the future.

This is the "Naimo" that Ama Town promotes.

Ento Hotel is located on Ama island, one of the islands that is part of the collective “Okinoshima” island - a geopark off the coast of Shimane prefecture.

For that reason, the hotel has a fantastic 1F exhibition of the geologic significance and creation of the island in a volcanic eruption 6 million years ago.

The rooms are fantastic, the design, wood flooring, large glass windows and choice selection of teas and ecologically minded amenities remind us to be mindful and to minimize waste on what is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The staff is absolutely wonderful, they are very courteous and personable. The breakfast has to be one of the best I have had in a hotel, with the right portions and local produce.

The photos created by Kentauros Yasunaga for the hotel, featured on the postcards gifted in the rooms is also a great way to welcome visitors and to introduce them to the majestic beauty of the surrounding area.

I can’t thank them enough for our great stay and experience. We look forward to going back again one day.

Great location right by the water and the Inter-island ferry port and tourist information office. Staff was really nice. There is a barbeque house and deck and you have the option to take your dinner there as mixed a barbeque of local seafood, meat and veggies. Recommended, especially if you've alteady had several days of ryokan food. Grill your own food and rice balls. Saw a great sunset. Dinner and Japanese breakfast included in lodging price. Old wing, where I stayed in large tatami room facing water, will be closing and should reopen with a nicer building in spring 2020 (Corrected from 2019).
